When my clients (or kids) start feeling overwhelmed, the first thing I ask about is sleep. We all know how essential sleep is for our physical and mental health. But here’s something many people don’t realize: There are seven other types of rest we need—beyond just sleep.
In her book Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, Saundra Dalton-Smith identifies these types of rest that are worth considering:
Physical Rest – Does your body feel tense, sore, or constantly fatigued? You might need more than just sleep—try stretching, deep breathing, or even a massage to help your body truly recharge.
Mental Rest – Is your mind always on overdrive? Take short breaks, journal, practice mindfulness, and set work boundaries to help quiet your thoughts and restore mental clarity.
Creative Rest – Feeling stuck or uninspired? Refill your creative energy by soaking in beauty—spend time in nature, listen to music, or enjoy art without the pressure to produce.
Emotional Rest – Do you carry the weight of others’ emotions? True emotional rest comes from having spaces where you can express your feelings openly, without pressure to perform or please others.
Social Rest – Do certain interactions drain you? Spend more time with life-giving people—and take a break from those who deplete your energy.
Sensory Rest – Overwhelmed by screens, notifications, and background noise? Unplug, dim the lights, and let your senses reset.
Spiritual Rest – Feeling disconnected? Reconnect with something bigger than yourself through prayer, meditation, time in nature, or acts of service.
Small shifts can have a big impact, especially when they become habits.
What type of rest will you try to get this week?
