Tweens and teens have a bad reputation for a reason: They can be rude, moody know-it-alls.

And there are times when it seems like EVERYTHING has to turn into an argument. No matter what we say, our tween and teen kids will contradict us. It can be hard to have even the simplest pleasant interaction.

It's heartbreaking. We look back on when our kids were six, seven and eight, and we think: Where did my sweet little kid go? Is this normal? Why isn't my child talking to me anymore? Is something wrong?

But it doesn't have to be this way. Resilience-Based Parenting™ is a toolkit for raising teens and tweens ... and loving it!

Hi, I'm Kristin MacDermott, a licensed marriage and family therapist, creator of the MacDermott Method, and an expert in teaching resilience to teenagers.

My resilience-training programs have been validated in four studies (including two randomized-controlled trials) with researchers from The Duke Clinical Research Institute, published in peer-review journals, and proven to promote clinically significant improvement in key mental health and resilience measures, including distress, anxiety, depression, PTSD, and self-efficacy.

Over the past two decades, I have developed resilience-training programs for some of the highest performing people on the planet, including Navy SEALS, the Los Angeles Police Department, and healthcare providers at 20 hospitals across the country, including the Duke Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health. I have created programs for cancer patients, caregivers, divorcing families, parents, athletes, coaches, students and for mentors and at-risk youth.

My passion is helping tweens and teens (and their parents) learn skills for being self-aware, showing up as the best version of themselves, and developing self-esteem and self-efficacy. All of us will face obstacles. There's no preventing it. But when we teach children resilience skills, we open the doors for them to move past these obstacles quickly and access their best-feeling lives. We give them the tools to choose good-feeling relationships, to pursue their dreams, and to grow into self-confident, compassionate, solution-focused adults.
